Love love this post! I agree completely, it takes time and patience, every dog is different and any type of agression or misbehaving is based on fear (in both people and dogs). Just like anything else, in order to get results you have to work at it. Your dog is so precious and I bet he is a Wonderful little munchkin, he just needed a bit of therapy to feel safe and know his boundries - Great Job!
Hope you had a fantstic Holiday and wishing you a Happy New Year!!! ~Edyta

Comment on What Thailand’s Elephants Taught Me About Being a Responsible Tourist for Animals by Anne

Dear Liz,

Do you know for sure that ALL domestic elephants in Thailand have gone (are supposed to go) through the pajaan torture?

My understanding is that this was the case in the past with wild baby elephants caught and separated from their mothers, in order to later use them for work. However, nowadays elephants are not used for work anymore, many are born in captivity and have contact with humans from the very beginning of their lifes etc.

To know for sure that, for instance, elephants used nowadays in shows or trekking for tourists have been previously tortured in order to be trained, would and should have serious and dramatic consequences for the future of such tourism activities (probably most of the tourist would no longer support such shows). But is this really the case?

Of course, the mere fact that the elephants are put in chains after the shows should be enough to make us understand that they are badly treated. However, the pajaan is simply unbearable to think of! I am sure that many people would not sleep at night anymore thinking that the nice elephant who did the nice painting they just bought had to suffer all that horrible torture! And I think that people deserve to know the truth. Not general (or generalized) statements, but the truth, i.e. to which extent is the pajaan used in nowadays Thailand?

I went to the Woodstock Farm Animal sanctuary to volunteer last year and was really taken by the goats. What little personalities! I had to smile when I saw you had posted Fern's photo. I have a special thing for her - she actually reminds me of my cat Haddie for some reason. Sweet baby!
Going to Thanksliving tomorrow and can't wait! Never been!

Hey Hannah,

Thanks for your comment. I'd love to hear more about the work you do at high schools, that sounds awesome. I'm thinking about planning some animal welfare trips abroad for high schools so if you know of any that would be open to that type of experience that'd be wonderful.

I get really depressed watching this stuff too, it got to a point where I had to take a break as well. It's overwhelming.

All the best to you Hannah!

Lizziy,

I loved your blog. I am a huge animal activist. I give talks at high schools about animals that go from the paddock to the plate. I tell the kids how things really happen without all the graphic parts of course and believe me, If your so called friend Ksmart actually saw any of the footage of a bobby calf she may think about giving Quik with milks. Im sure a 2-3 yr old wouldnt know the difference between real milk or soy anyway. Animals DO feel pain and anguish for their young. As someone said before.. google.com or youtube.. footage does not lie.

But back to the issue at hand. It never ceases to amaze me watching people consume another species breast milk and i have to say when i went through my transition (as i like to call it) i did a lot of research to get my facts straight, so much so i got depressed for 3 moths. My vegan friends tole me i had to stop looking at footage.

Anyway. I would love to chat more with you on the topic..
Thank you for posting it.
